2 Peter 3:7: But By The Same Word The Heavens And Earth That Now Exist Are Stored Up For Fire

2 Peter 3:7
[7] But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. (ESV)

We are limited in our understanding of just how powerful our God is. By his word he created the entire universe. Consider all that we see in our world. God made it all. Consider all of the planets, stars, and galaxies. All of it made by God. The universe is bigger than our finite minds can even conceive. Scientists can measure the universe, but none of us can truly grasp it's immensity.

Peter brought up the fact that it was God's word that created the heavens and the earth. By the same word, given by the same God, there will come fire, which is now stored up. This fire of destruction is coming on the world. God is a righteous judge. We know that there will be a new heaven and earth. God will judge the sin of this world, and replace it with a new one.

The false teachers were intentionally ignoring the doctrine of God's judgment. We can all be sure that those same teachers are now firm believers in the wrath of an almighty God. They are experiencing the eternal wrath of the one who created the heavens and the earth. While they false teachers did not see the fire of God's destruction on our earth, they are experiencing the fire of hell.

It seems to be a consistent lie of the enemy throughout the centuries of time, to convince people that God will not bring judgment. There are pastors in churches who are timid about speaking on the topic. It does not seem loving, they say. If they do not warn sinners about coming judgment, they will perish in their sins. The loving thing to do is to preach God's judgment, and the salvation offered by Christ.

Let us all be thankful that God will judge sin, and that we can be spared his wrath through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ, on the cross.
