2 Peter 2:2: And Many Will Follow Their Sensuality, And Because of Them The Way Of Truth Will Be Blasphemed.

2 Peter 2:2
[2] And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. (ESV)

We know that there will always be false teachers who will try to work their way into the church and deceive all whom they can. We have been warned that we are to be aware of their falsehood. We know that doctrine is essential. We must be continually striving to know the truth of God's Word so that we can counter the lies of the enemy spoken through false teachers.

It is sad to think that, as the Apostle Peter tells us, many will follow these false teachers. He says that people will follow their sensuality. This tells us a lot about the character faults of false teachers. They have in common that they are led by their sensuality, not their spirituality. They are immoral. They claim to be following Jesus, but they do not live as if he is their Lord.

One of the reasons that people are drawn to lawless, sensual, immoral leaders is because they themselves are led by their sensuality. They also want to be thought of as being spiritual without truly surrendering themselves to God. They are looking for financial prosperity. They are looking for sexual relationships that give them pleasure, they are looking for power. They are not looking to be servants of Christ.

Peter tells us the terrible result of these false teachers having influence in the body of Christ. He says that the way of truth will be blasphemed. The world is watching the church at all times. They are waiting to see if our claims about Christ are truthful. If they see us chasing after the same worldly pleasures, while claiming to know Christ, they will see us as hypocrites, and truth will be blasphemed.

Consider your own relationship with God. Are you chasing after sensual pleasures? Are you only listening to teachers who feed your own pursuit of pleasure? If so, repent, and ask God to show you the joys of following him, and not the world.
