2 Peter 2:18: For, Speaking Loud Boasts Of Folly, They Entice By Sensual Passions Of The Flesh Those Who Are Barely Escaping From Those Who Live In Error.

2 Peter 2:18
[18] For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. (ESV)

False teachers are notorious for using words to deceive people. Because they do not value the truth they cannot teach the truth. They desire for people to think that they are teaching the truth. In order to deceive people they are sure to include elements of the truth in what they say. No false teacher would be foolish enough to come out with what they really believe. Their falsehood is always disguised.

Notice how Peter says that the false teachers are boasters. I have heard many false teachers who will make wild claims of a spiritual nature that would impress people who are easily fooled. They will speak of how they have been to heaven and spoken with God. They have had regular conversations with angels. God is giving them direct revelation equal to the authority of Scripture. Foolish boasting.

These evil men entice people by sensual passions of the flesh. One helpful way to understand what Peter is saying here is that the false teachers are teaching a spirituality that appeals to the flesh. Their doctrine allows for people to live a life of sinful pleasures, yet still consider themselves to be godly. This is nothing new. Satan has always offered this kind of deception.

Peter describes those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. What he is describing here are people who are trapped in various sins. They want an escape from a life of addiction. They are bound in sexual depravity. They are bound in other kinds of sins. These false teachers take advantage of the people who are in this kind of trouble. It is a shameful thing to prey on those who are weak.

When you hear preachers talk in grand terms about what they have seen and done be wary. When you hear a true man or woman of God speak, you should notice humility, and an exaltation of Christ.
