2 Peter 2:13: Suffering Wrong As The Wage For Their Wrongdoing. They Count It Pleasure To Revel In The Daytime.

2 Peter 2:13
[13] Suffering wrong as the wage for their wrongdoing. They count it pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, while they feast with you. (ESV)

False teachers who had infiltrated the church were known by their arrogance and immorality. We look at those who are involved in the lusts of this world, and we sometimes think that the people who engage in their lives of sinfulness get away with no punishment. The Apostle Peter is reminding us that suffering wrong is the wage for those who live for their flesh. Sin has consequences.

These leaders are described as reveling in the daytime. This speaks to the fact that most of those who engage in all kinds of sinful behavior tend to do so in the nighttime. More than one person had a parent who would warn their children that nothing good happens after a certain hour of night. There is a sense in which people do wicked things at night, so as not to be seen. These sinful men sinned boldly in daylight.

Peter's use of the words, "blots and blemishes," is addressing the reality that those who belong to Christ are to be without blemish. They are to be pure and holy, like the Savior. Ephesians 5:27 said that Jesus gave himself up for his bride, "so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish."

Not only are these false teachers stained with their sins, but they feast with the believers whom they are trying to deceive. This description of a feast is not just any feast. This is a reference to the celebration of the Lord's Supper, holy communion. At that time, in the Early Church, believers would have full meals of celebration. This was to be a holy occasion. The false teachers had corrupted these feasts also.

God has never ceased desiring for his church to be holy. We need to be aware of those who would corrupt the church with false teaching and immorality. Look to the Savior and walk in purity.
