2 Peter 1:19: And We Have The Prophetic Word More Fully Confirmed, To Which You Will Do Well To Pay Attention

2 Peter 1:19
[19] And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, (ESV)

After the Apostle Peter has given his testimony of being an eyewitness of the glorification of Christ at the Mount of Transfiguration, he speaks of the value of the Word of God, the Scriptures. We have the prophetic word more fully confirmed. This is a reference to the fact that the Bible is the words of prophets who spoke for God. It has been confirmed as true.

So often, we like to believe whatever it is that we think we experience. Peter had one of the greatest experiences ever, seeing Jesus appear with Moses and Elijah. As wonderful as that experience was, it is not experience that is our authority in our walk with the Lord, it is the proven Word of God, Scripture. Peter reminds his original recipients of this letter that they would do well to pay attention to the Bible.

There was false teaching that those in the church needed to be aware of. It was not there experience that was going to help them. It was knowing and relying upon the truth found in God's Word. Peter gives the Word such significance as to compare it to a light shining in a dark place. The dark place of Peter's day was the lies being told about the nature of Christ, and his return. The Bible shines light to that darkness.

In our world today, there is much talk about prophecy. People claim to have an experience with God. Some will even claim that God spoke to them. We have the prophetic word more fully confirmed. Scripture is confirmed truth. The so-called prophecy that we hear today is a lot of false teaching, with someone declaring, "God told me."

Be aware of false doctrine being taught by so-called prophets. True prophecy is in the Word of God alone. Pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place.
