2 Peter 1:3: His Divine Power Has Granted To Us All Things That Pertain To Life And Godliness

2 Peter 1:3
[3] His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, (ESV)

The Christian walk is a difficult one. We know that there will be constant temptations. Our faith will be challenged by many who mock us, and will even persecute us. If we were to depend on our own abilities to live our lives for God, we would surely be defeated. The Apostle Peter delivers great news in this verse, and in the verses to follow, in relation to how we are to live godly lives.

We discover that we are not without help. God's power has given to us all things. Pause there for a moment. All things have been given to us that pertain to life and godliness. He did not say, "some things." We are not lacking in anything that we need in order to live a godly life. What generally happens is that we do not use the things that God has given. The error is ours, not our loving God's.

We have these great things through the knowledge of him who called us. Where would we find that knowledge of him who called us? We find it most clearly in his written Word. It is in the Scriptures that we discover who God is, how man has sinned against his maker, the necessity of a sacrifice for our sin, Jesus' perfect atonement, our salvation, resurrection, and eternal life. All of this is found in the Bible.

Paul wrote these words to Timothy: "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17). God, by his divine power has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness. We find out what those things are by reading his holy, written Word.

You have all you need to live a godly life. How are you doing? Are you growing in your knowledge of what God has equipped you with? Open the Bible regularly. There is power for life and godliness.
