2 Peter 1:12: Therefore I Intend Always To Remind You Of Theses Qualities, Though You Know Them And Are Established In The Truth That You Have.
2 Peter 1:12
[12] Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. (ESV)
We have looked at these qualities that are to be added to our faith. The qualities listed in verses 5 through 7 are: virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love. I fear that many Christians do not even know that Scripture compels them to "make every effort" to supplement their faith with these important godly qualities.
Peter is not just giving a random reminder to the believers who would be the first recipients of his letter. He says that he intends to always remind them. We might think, "Why does he have to remind them so much?" Two reasons come to mind. Firstly, these qualities are essential for our assurance, and for the credibility of our Christian testimony. Secondly, humans are prone to forget.
The Apostle Peter is writing to those who already know the qualities that he is writing about. It is clear that this was a frequent soap box for the Apostle. Some parishioners think that a pastor should not keep preaching on the same topic. The same people would have likely had a problem with Peter. He makes it very clear what his intention is. He is going to remind people of these qualities, again and again.
As you consider these qualities that are to be added to our faith, consider what a difference it would make in the life of the church if Christians were actively living these out. Our communities would be greatly impacted. Churches would be greatly impacted. Perhaps, instead of pastors having to leave a congregation, or even leaving ministry, churches would be healthy, loving, places honoring Christ.
Peter is reminding us again, and again about these godly qualities. Here they are again: virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love. Don't be offended at the redundancy. Ask the Lord to help you to make every effort to add these qualities to your faith.
