1 Peter 1:7: So That The Tested Genuineness Of Your Faith--More Precious Than Gold

1 Peter 1:7

So that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (ESV)

We are saved from our sin condition by placing our faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. This faith that saves us is a gift given to us by God himself. (Ephesians 2:8-9). As we continue to walk with the Lord that faith that we have is tested again and again. The testing of our faith shows us, and shows the world around us, that we genuinely belong to the Lord.

Peter uses this illustration of gold being tested by fire. We know that for gold to be purified it has to be put into incredible heat, and the impurities are removed. He is saying that even gold itself, although it can be purified with fire, will ultimately perish. Gold is so precious. It is so valuable. Kings and countries will fight to the death to possess gold because of its value. Peter says that even gold perishes.

What does not perish? Our faith! Yes, it will be tested by fire. There will be painful struggles, trials, and persecutions. Our faith is stronger even than gold. Our faith will not be destroyed. This truth needs to lift you up and encourage you each day. Nothing in all of creation will be able to destroy your faith. Even death is a conquered enemy. Christ defeated death for you so that your faith can survive eternally.

What is the ultimate outcome of our genuine faith? Our faith will "be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ." To those who truly understand what it means to be a Christian they know that God gaining all of the glory is the supreme purpose of all things in life. We want God to be glorified. Our faith, being tested and proven to be imperishable, will give God glory.

Are you struggling in your faith? Know that you are going to make it. You will survive the trial, even death. Place your focus on giving God glory in all things. This is your eternal reward.
