Romans 15:26: For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution . . .

Romans 15:26

[26] For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem. (ESV)

The fact that Macedonia is pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem is an example of what the work of the Gospel does in people's hearts. Jesus redeems us from sin, and empowers us to have a heart of compassion for others. We go from being needy to meeting needs. This was the case in Macedonia and also the case in our lives.

For a little background, look at Acts 16:9. This is where we find the Apostle Paul's first engagement with Macedonia. It is in a vision! Luke writes this account:  "And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” The Apostle Paul obediently went to Macedonia, bringing them the life changing message of the Gospel.

Philippi and Thessalonica were located in Macedonia. These are places where God did great works through the Apostle Paul. They heard of Paul's efforts to bless the people in Jerusalem. What response could they have but to respond with compassion. When they were in need God sent them the Apostle Paul. Now, they have an opportunity to give to others in need.

The Gospel transforms people. We are not saved from sin so that we can coast along in our lives until we reach heaven. Rather, God changes our hearts so that we can be a blessing to others who are in need. A heart that does not have compassion for others is a heart that still needs to be changed by the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

In what ways has the message of the Gospel changed you? What needs has God met in your life? How will you, with a heart of compassion, reach out and meet someone else's needs?
